Most are on the MOH hardness scale of 7.0 to 8.5. While they may not be as hard as diamonds, they are fairly sturdy and require little maintenance besides the occasional polishing with a jewelry cloth or quick wipe with lukewarm mild soapy water.

Softer semi-precious stones such as opals and pearls are relatively low on the MOH hardness scale, between 2.5 to 5.5, meaning that they are easily scratched and abraded.
